Cinematic Tips for Wedding Films

Ryan Noble
Cinematic Tips for Wedding Films

After filming over 100 weddings across the American West and beyond, we've learned what truly makes a wedding film feel cinematic and timeless. Here are our top tips.

1. Shoot Wide, Then Tight

The biggest mistake we see is filmmakers staying too tight the whole day. Wide establishing shots give context and create a sense of place. Intercut these with intimate close-ups for emotional impact.

2. Chase the Light

Golden hour isn't just for portraits. We always build in time for a "golden hour session" with the couple — even just 15 minutes can yield the most beautiful footage of the day.

3. Capture Real Moments

The best wedding films aren't about perfect poses. They're about the nervous laughter before the ceremony, the tears during the vows, the wild dancing at reception. Stay alert and ready.

4. Audio is Everything

A beautiful image with bad audio ruins the moment. We use wireless lavs on the couple AND the officiant, plus a board feed for music. Multiple redundancies.

5. Tell a Story

Every film needs a beginning, middle, and end. We structure our edits around the emotional arc of the day — anticipation, commitment, celebration.
